Free milk powder for rural kindergarten kids
KOTA KINABALU: Kindergarten children as far as the remote sub-district of Pai tan, located between Pitas and Beluran, will be getting free milk powder when they get back to school this year.
Making this possible is the Society of Hope Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, which initiated the Project Hope Milk Fund before last Christmas to raise funds for the purchase of powdered milk for hardcore poor chi1dren from urban areas, children in rural communities and those fom the 840 Catego1y as listed under the Department of Social Welfare.
"It was a privilege engaging with Sister Dorothy Laudi of the Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception (FSIC). She runs 13 kindergartens in Pai tan, where access involves hours of travel on unsealed roads and boat-rides through crocodileinfested waters at a particular stretch of the Kinabatangan River.
"When the Covid situation calms down a bit, we will be visiting her with more. Eve1y child dese,ves to not go hung,y. And we deeply appreciate this 'giant' among us, a tiny, barefooted nun with a large heart for'my children'," said President of the Society ofHope,Josephine Hadikusumo after presenting packets of milk powder to Sister Dorothy, here, on Thursday.
Relating her experience, Sister Dorothy told the president that when she did not have that many packs of milk, she would dilute a pack with a lot of water so that every child could have some milk.
"With these packets of milk powder from the Society of Hope, I will now be able to give a pack to each of the four-year olds when school starts again," she enthused.
